"Mary is a really soothing and lovely woman. She has an energy to her that urges calmness and warmth, which I think is very necessary for the kinds of treatments she does. We met at her place and got started right away with the treatment. She hardly asked me anything about the dynamics of my phobia and the relationship I had formed with it, which was at first a bit jarring to me but I now realize was a very important part of the effectiveness of the treatment- she wanted that kind of initial detachment from me and my phobia so that I could be objective about it and thus communicate it to her objectively. The session started with a questionnaire of sorts whereby she would say a word and I would rate it on a scale from 1-10 (10 being the most intense) in regards to me. She would say "fear" for example and then leave it to me to decide its intensity in my life- either in general or in regards to my phobia; I naturally catered the questionnaire more toward my phobia. After each question or so, she would lead me through a "tap" and then she would ask me to re-rate some of the words on the questionnaire she had asked me. I would just close my eyes and say the exact number in my head, which decreased following every "tap." While the tapping is meant to physically disrupt signals going from your brain to the rest of the body, I found it to be very soothing and it left me feeling soft and entranced. The most profound part for me was that Mary, for some reason, was able to take very minimal information from me and somehow completely understand the dynamics of my phobia. It was from almost nothing that she was able to gather pretty much every detail of my phobia- and it was always in the tapping that she seemed to really connect with me and understand my phobia. Additionally- and probably most importantly- Mary's treatment ecouraged, above all else, the ability to love and accept yourself no matter what phobia you may have. As we parted ways she shouted over her shoulder at me, "Remember: gratitude, gratitude, gratitude."
